During the war, the PN was deprived of some of its leaders. Dr Enrico Mizzi and other leading supporters were exiled to Uganda by the colonial government on suspicion of pro-Italian leaning. The other leader, Sir Ugo Mifsud died while defending the cause of these internees in the Parliament. |
When the war ended, Dr Enrico Mizzi together with the others continued to struggle for more rights for the Maltese. In 1950, the PN was elected and Dr Enrico Mizzi was appointed Prime Minister. This did not last long, since Dr Mizzi died in office and was succeeded by Dr Giorgio Borg Olivier. |
The PN was returned in office under the leadership of Dr Borg Olivier in 1953 'till 1955 when a motion of no confidence was passed in Parliament. |
In 1962, the PN managed to win the General Elections under a new constitution and in 1964 Malta became an Independent State within the British Commonwealth. This was the largest achievement of the PN and a personal victory for Dr Borg Olivier. |
The PN failed to win the 1971 general elections and went in the opposition 'till 1987. During this time, the PN made a major reshuffle in its structures and managed to organize itself into a modern and efficient political power. |
Dr Borg Olivier relinquished his post in 1977 to be succeeded by the present leader Dr Eddie Fenech Adami. |
The PN embarked itself on a campaign of passive resistance. This was caused by the perverse results of the 1981 elections, when in obtaining the majority of votes; it failed to get the majority of seats in Parliament. This led to various amendments in the Constitution where the right if the majority of votes was recognized. |
The PN led by Dr Fenech Adami returned in Government in 1987 and in 1990 an application for Malta to join the European Union was filed. |
Although in the 1996 elections the PN failed to make it again, it returned in office in 1998 when fresh elections were made. This was due to the fact that the Labour Party had to relinquish the government because of internal struggles with its former leader, Dom Mintoff. During this period, Malta's application to join the the European Union was frozen and it was revived when the present Government led by the PN took office again. |

The Club | |||||||
"Dar id-Demokrazija" is the Nationalist Party Club in Mellieha . It is ideally situated in the heart of the commercial and business centre of the village. |
It was officially inaugurated by the leader of the Party Dr Eddie Fenech Adami on the 21st March, 1987. |
The club is housed in a very spacious building and the amenities available are various and very modern. The members of the club, and the visitors - especially tourists - discover a very comfortable and welcoming atmosphere whenever they visit these premises. |
The Sectional Committee that runs the place tries to keep its members informed about the local political scene. It organizes conferences, talks, debates, exhibitions, forums, get-togethers, and social occasions for all the members, always for free, to keep them adjourned and at the same time enjoying some good times together. All sectors of the society are invited to take part and activities are created to meet the requirements of these sectors. |
The Club, besides a games' room, with a full billiard table, runs a fully stocked bar, a cafeteria and an à la carte restaurant. The competitive prices and the genuine products sold, make the bar a very popular meeting place for the locals and the foreigners alike. Patrons can relax in comfort reading the local and foreign papers, or chatting with acquaintances, whilst slipping a cappuccino or a cold beer in the air-conditioned bar area. |
The Committee, with all the backing of the Nationalist Party central administration, keeps itself busy to upgrade the premises to keep the "Dar id-Demokrazija" - House of Democracy - a leading place where the values of democracy, social justice, and Christian values are taught to be cherished and practiced for the benefit of one and all alike. | |||||||
